What are the five major properties of ABS plastic material?


General properties of ABS plastic material:


The appearance of ABS is opaque and ivory-colored pellets. It is non-toxic, tasteless, and has low water absorption. Its products can be dyed into various colors and have a high gloss of 90%. ABS has a good combination with other materials, and is easy to be processed by surface printing, coating and plating. The oxygen index of ABS is 18.2, it is a flammable polymer, the flame is yellow, there is black smoke, it is burnt but does not drip, and it emits a special cinnamon smell.


ABS is a kind of resin with very good comprehensive performance. It has higher impact strength and surface hardness in a relatively wide temperature range, higher heat distortion temperature than PA and PVC, and good dimensional stability.


The fluidity of ABS melt is better than PVC and PC, but worse than PE, PA and PS, similar to POM and HIPS. The flow characteristics of ABS are non-Newtonian fluids, and its melt viscosity is related to processing temperature and shear rate, but it is more sensitive to shear rate.


Mechanical properties of ABS plastic material:

ABS has excellent mechanical properties, its impact strength is good, and it can be used at extremely low temperatures. Even if the ABS product is damaged, it can only be tensile failure and not impact failure. ABS has excellent wear resistance, good dimensional stability, and oil resistance, and can be used for bearings under medium loads and speeds. The creep of ABS is larger than that of PSF and PC, but smaller than that of PA and POM. The flexural strength and compressive strength of ABS are inferior among plastics. The mechanical properties of ABS are greatly affected by temperature.


Thermal properties of ABS plastic material:

ABS is an amorphous polymer with no obvious melting point; its melt viscosity is high, its fluidity is poor, its weatherability is poor, and it can be discolored by ultraviolet light. The heat distortion temperature is 70-107°C (around 85), and the product can be increased by about 10°C after annealing. It is more sensitive to temperature and shear rate; ABS can still show a certain degree of toughness at -40°C, and can be used for a long time in the temperature range of -40°C to 85°C. 


Electrical properties of ABS plastic material:

ABS has good electrical insulation and is almost unaffected by temperature, humidity and frequency, and can be used in most environments.


Environmental performance of ABS plastic material:

ABS is not affected by water, inorganic salts, alkali alcohols and hydrocarbon solvents and various acids, but it is soluble in ketones, aldehydes and chlorinated hydrocarbons, and will cause stress cracking when corroded by glacial acetic acid and vegetable oil.
